Species Standards

Prefered Habitat: Tend to nest in "cliff regions" of the world, temperatures vary - any environment except
tundra and polar regions.

Diet: Strictly carnivorous - eats larger animals, such as deer, sheep, or cattle.

Call: These creatures can make a range of noises that include "hisses" (happy), "growls" (angry), "grunts"
(annoyed or upset), and the most impressive call is a loud cry that could remind one of a trumpet mixed
with a violin (this is similar to a bark - reason for the noise is unknown at this time).

Special Care Needs: Their scales tend to loose their luster over time, get dry and crack - one should apply
oils every once in a while to prevent discomfort to the creature. Be cautious - as these animals are
extremely poisonous! Their stinger can inject a lethal toxin that is designed for killing large animals. Flight
for this animal is difficult, but possible. It's wing structure causes it to fly like a bat (meaning it cannot glide,
it has to constantly flap it's wings or it will fall to the ground) and thus flight takes a lot of work... If you wish to
teach your creature to carry a rider while in flight, it will take a lot of special training (and a special saddle).
Their wing membranes can dry and crack easily, so rubbing them with oils on a frequent basis will help
with flight.

Biology and Anatomy:  The Wiurn are cold-blooded creatures that need to moniter their body-temperatures
by warming up in the sun, or staying cool in the shade.  Their scales are nearly rock-hard, and their talons
sharp.  Though they have sharp teeth, their jaws do not open very wide at all - no more widely than a
horse's, it would seem.  Their "head-plate" is a super-thick fingernail-like deposit on the top of it's head,
forming a hard and sturdy ridge.  This ridge is used to protect the creatures head, as well as displays and
social interactions.  The beasts' tail blade is generally extremely poisonous - a single sting can bring down
a creature the size of a cow.  These creatures lack front-limbs, and generally walk along the ground (or up
cliffs) like a bat.

Behavioral Study: Because it lacks larger talons and teeth for bringing down prey, and uses a strategy
similar to a falcon and viper mixed together for hunting... It swoops down from the sky and makes a single
stroke with it's tail, then waits until the animal dies (or is too weak to struggle) to go in for the meal. When
fighting with another of it's own kind, it usually doesn't use claws, or tail-sting.. instead, they bash their
heads together (similar to rams) in a display of strength - after all, that's what the hard "face plate" is for. If
you can get such a creature to trust you to the point where it would rather "nudge" you with it's head rather
than "sting" you with it's tail, consider yourself to have a very loyal animal.

Suggested Uses: It is not suggested that this creature be kept as an average pet (though it is possible)...
They can be used as flying mounts (though they aren't the greatest flyers when carrying a rider)... They can
be very easily used to take down cavalry (mounted horses) in battle... They can be used to guard things -
such as castles or larger plots of property (that have enough game or meat to sustain the creature when full
grown)... The greatest suggestion of course, would be a combination of all of the above... Who wouldn't
want a loyal pet and companion to guard your plot of land in a time of peace, then fly you into battle and take
down your enemies horses..? Well... Perhaps a lot of people wouldn't like that, but it's what's suggested.

Breeds Available
Mistletoe and Holly: Asside from their special coloring, the Mistletoe and Holly breeds were not truely unique
in any way from the standards of the Wiurn species. Mistletoe and Holly were special critters that were only
available just before the 25th of 2005. We're terribly sorry if you didn't get the chance to adopt one of their
eggs on time, but we only engeneered a few of these special "holiday" colors.

Natural: The Natural breed of the Wiurn species is what one would call the "standard". It has no lusterous
coloring, nor is it unique in any way. One can assume that the Natural breed will be the one to last the
longest, as less people seem to want them.

Light: The Light breed was imbued with the elemental energy of light upon it's creation, and thus is more
resiliant to it. Who knows if it will learn any more special abilities having to do with the light in the future, for
all we know, it may spit sun-beams! (but that's rather unlikely, isn't it?)

Dark: The Dark breed is just the opposite of the Light breed, in that it was imbued with the elemental energy
of darkness upon it's creation, thus making it more resiliant to it. Also, like it's Light sibling, it's future
abilities are as of yet unknown.

Royal: The Royal breed of Wiurn was created to suit kings. It is far more "tough" than it's kin - it can fly faster
and with more agility, it can carry more weight, and it can last longer in the air and travel farther. If one were
to seek the "ultimate" flying mount, then Royal would be your best bet. Unfortunately, because of these
attributes, they were quickly adopted out. We're sorry if you missed your chance to adopt one
