Species Standards

Prefered Habitat:  The Rakai will live anywhere there is good game to be had.  If that game takes them to the
grand plains, then so be it.  The forests?  No problem.  The mountains?  They will climb them.  Rarely does
good game go to the Frozen North or the Deserts, so it is rare to find a pack in such a barren location.

Diet:  The Rakai are typically strict carnivores - preferring fresh food and meat, but if the need calls for it, they
are willing to eat carrion.  They do occasionally add a small amount of plant-like materials, such as berries or
grasses to their diet, but that's only for extra nutrition that their meat-based diet cannot provide.

Call:  They growl when irritated, bark when providing a warning (or sometimes even playing), and provide long
mournful howls to communicate with each other when at a great distance.  In short - if you can imagine a wolf
to make the sound, they can likely do it also.

Special Care Needs:  Without proper care, company, and socialization - these beasts tend to get "feral" pretty
quick.  And without a good "pack" (even if their pack includes only themselves and their owner) these
creatures will never truely learn to behave properly among it's fellow creatures.

Biology and Anatomy:  Their fur is thick and firm, like the guard hairs on the nape of a wolf's neck.  The scales
that show themselves on occasion are rumored to be "hard as diamonds", though that rumor is false - even if
the scales are quite hard, providing protective armor for the beasts.  Their "crests" - a series of long scales
along their backs and jawline are extremely vibrant - and on most breeds shift in their colors, various hues
according to their breed.  Because of these marvelously colored scales, the beasts are often hunted for their
scales to produce jewelry, armor, and other various decorations.  Within' the beasts heart is also a thing of
value - for within' it lies a "jewel" unlike any other, which contains the "fire" of the creature.  Unfortunately, the
only way to see this "jewel" is if it were to be carved out, thus killing the poor thing.

Behavioral Study:  These creatures are apex predators, fearing little to nothing.  Unfortunately, poaching has
caused them to become more leery - and often agressive  - of mankind.. however, those raised by mankind
learn nothing of such suspicions.  They live in tight packs, where each member has it's own position, role,
and personality.  Every member, down to the lowest ranking is important.  Of each pack, usually only the top
two mated pairs (of which male and female are equal rank) are allowed to have pups - as they are the most
clever and fit of hunters and leaders.

Suggested Uses:  "Fire in one's soul - magic in one's veins - blood on one's fangs - love makes one whole."
That is the poem that follows the Rakai-sarane, often just called "Rakai" wherever they go.  And with those
words alone, one can determine their meaning.
Breeds Available
Arcane:   The Arcane Rakai is a battle-mages best friend.  Not only can they act as a "familiar" and provide
magical aid and support, but they will also defend a mage with their life.  The Arcane is generally the most
mild-mannered of the Rakai, and is rarely seen in wild packs.  They'd prefer to romp in a field, or be lazy by
the fireplace in a quiet library.  For some reason, the Arcane Rakai only enjoy the company of one who has a
connection to magic or the mind - but a ribbon of telepathy or empathy will likely solve this "problem" for a
common man or woman.

Fel:  The Fel Rakai is tainted with the magics of the "other world".  As such, necromancers and people who
wish to control the world around them generally enjoy the company of such esteemed guard-beasts, in
which they can usually tap into their greater power... However, though a Fel Rakai is infused with the
energies of the blight itself, that does not mean it has always corrupted their mind - they are usually gentle
beasts, unless trained otherwise.

Fury:  The Fury Rakai is aptly named because of it's "explosive" attitude.  They can be calm like any creature,
but if something should provoke them - they tend to snap with steely jaws in a burst of rage.  The fire in their
heart rarely allows them to sit in one place for long, and they prefer to be with a companion that is willing to
travel... if they should stay in one location for more than a month, they tend to get cranky.   They are also
passionate creatures, and love just as strongly as they hate.

Pale
The Pale is so named because all of the color has been sapped from it's body.  It is
rumored that this is because it's heart contains no magic - but owners of the beasts
argue that the opposite is true - and it contains so much that a single color cannot be
displayed, thus - it is white...  The scientists belive that this is simply a case of
albinoism, an interesting and desirable trait for collectors of rare beasts.
Death Rakai-Sarane
Pale Rakai-Sarane
Woodland Rakai-Sarane
Death
The Death Rakai is a prefered companion for many necromancers, for it is indeed
"death-touched", from it's magic, to it's milky dead-eye.
Woodland
The Woodland Rakai is the only variety that seems to lack the ethreal "flames" that the
other Rakai all have.  Strange, but all the same, some people tend to like them.
